Grey Forest is a
community of some 250 or so families nestled in a picturesque Hill Country
setting Northwest of San Antonio. As its name implies,
Grey Forest is indeed a forest of grey-green live oaks, meandering creeks,
and many quaint stone cottages dating back to the early 1900s.
Grey Forest is located on Scenic Loop Road, which
together with Boerne Stage Road, once served as a stage coach route for
Northern Bexar county. The roadway comprises a scenic 13 miles
and was enjoyed by early 20th century automobile caravans who came up with
its name. It is now enjoyed by bikers, hikers and others.
Scenic Loop Playground was the name of the
summer camp established in the area prior to Grey Forest becoming a city.
Scenic Loop Playground Club is now the name of an association in
Grey Forest. To help retain the historic character
of the City of Grey Forest, the structures in the area have been
documented and a National Registry designation is being sought for the
city.
