Scenic Loop Playground

Scenic Loop Playground was created as a camp in 1928 for people from San Antonio wishing to escape the summer heat. The Scenic Loop Playground was helpful in the establishment of the City of Grey Forest giving its roadways and some of its land to the city.

The Beginning:

Scenic Loop Playground was a development by E. N. Requa of properties and park settings on the Balcones fault some 500 to 1000 feet above San Antonio .   Settlers in the area built summer cottages,  known as Sunday houses, from the  native rock.    The creeks and streams were developed with spring-fed swimming areas and fishing spots.   Quaint names abound like Children's Swimming Pool, 12 Foot Dam, Fishing Hole, and many others.    Riding and hiking trails were created and at one point an area was fenced for a yearly rodeo.   E. N. Requa left the parks, roads, and common areas in the development to the owners of property in the area for their enjoyment and to preserve the area.   Many owners can now find that entry on older deeds and in the deed of conveyance by E. N. Requa in the 1930s.

Scenic Loop Playground Club:

The Scenic Loop Playground Club, named after the development, was started in the 1960s as a non-profit association with the objectives to:
     a.  Provide social, educational, and recreational programs and facilities for the membership.
     b. Promote the general welfare and natural beauty of the community in cooperation with the City of Grey Forest, Texas, and the surrounding communities.

Membership is open to those residing or owning property in Grey Forest.  There is one membership per family with voting allowed for owners of property.  The cost per  year is $60 per family or $40 for senior membership where head of household is over 60.   Membership forms can be obtained at Grey Forest City Hall.   One can also print the form by going to:  SLPC Membership
